Jam's Home is a project I worked on for the 48 hour 2019 Global Game Jam. The game focuses on a dog waiting for their owner to come home. In order to defend their owner's house, Jam will bark at any person, car, or squirrel that threatens its territory. It was my first game jam and I was excited to work on UI with an upperclassman who had experience in the field.
This project was made in Adobe Illustrator for the 2019 Global Game Jam
INTRODUCTION Before the game begins, players are greeted with instructions telling them how to play. I created these instructions to match the friendliness we wanted the player to feel. The warm, vibrant color palette is meant to evoke these feelings. I also matched the rounded vector drawings with the rounded font.
INSTRUCTIONS PART 1
INSTRUCTIONS This page of the instructions introduces the premise of the game. Since the main mechanic is barking, I chose to represent that on this page so that the player would be able to understand that they will bark a lot in this game. I also made these barks different colors to add visual interest. I also made them slightly translucent to make the barks cohesive.
INSTRUCTIONS PART 2
INSTRUCTIONS This page also utilizes the warm color scheme. I tried to stick to the colors that these objects would normally be. Squirrels can be yellow, cars can be red, dogs can be black, and mailmen can be blue. Since these colors are rooted in reality, I thought it would make it easier for the players to accept these colors for these things.
CONSEQUENCES To explain what happens if you do or don't bark, I created this page so that the player will understand the consequences for Jam if the player is unable to protect the home. I used iconography to represent this. Since some dogs are food motivated, I thought that a broken bone could be a cool way to represent a broken heart while a full food bowl could represent a full heart.
CONCLUSION I created this page as a way to spur the player to action, using dashed lines going in various directions to represent motion. I thought that this would be a good way to tell the user that the instructions are done and it is time to play.
BARK BUTTONS Jam has different barks to keep away different threats. Due to this, players have different keys on the keyboard they need to press to bark. If the player uses the wrong bark, the threat will not be fully taken care of. When players hit these keys, these icons move to give the player feedback that those buttons were indeed pressed.
MENU BUTTONS These are buttons for the main menu of the game. They have an unhovered and hovered state so that the player knows when they are hovering over an object. Through this feedback, the game can be more clear about what is going on.
